Course description
SIdE Summer Schools are open to scholars and practitioners at all levels and are particularly aimed at PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and junior researchers. They provide advanced training in modern econometric methods, combining rigorous theoretical foundations with applications to current empirical research.
The 2027 Summer School offers an integrated one-week programme on two rapidly developing areas of econometric research: the analysis of social and economic networks and discrete-choice models with unobserved choice sets.
- Days 1-3 examine the econometric analysis of network data, covering network measurement and centrality, estimation and inference under network dependence, and statistical and strategic models of network formation.
- Days 4-6 focus on discrete-choice models in which the alternatives actually considered by decision-makers are not observed and may include only a subset of all available options. The module covers partial identification, point identification and statistical inference for preferences and consideration mechanisms.
Together, the two modules provide participants with frontier econometric tools for studying individual decisions, social interactions and economic relationships when the underlying choice or network structure is only partially observed.
Research Workshop and Participants Presentations
In addition to the lectures, the Summer School will include a research workshop in which a selected group of participating PhD students and early-career researchers will have the opportunity to present their ongoing research.
The workshop is intended to promote scientific exchange and provide presenters with feedback from the lecturers and other participants. Research projects related to the broad themes of the School, as well as contributions in other areas of theoretical and applied econometrics, will be considered.
Requirements
Module 1. First-year PhD-level econometrics, including maximum likelihood, GMM and basic asymptotic theory, together with linear algebra and probability. Familiarity with discrete games and partial identification is helpful but not required.
Module 2. A working knowledge of graduate-level econometrics and probability is recommended. Familiarity with standard discrete-choice models is helpful but not required.
Reading list
The reading lists reflect the material to be covered during the School. Additional material may be provided before the beginning of the course and during the lectures. Detailed reading lists for both modules will be available in the Public attachments section of the webpage.

Venue and timetables
The Module will last one week and will be held in the University Residential Centre, Via Frangipane 6, 47032 Bertinoro (FC). Participants will be hosted in the Centre guest quarters (in case of reduced availability of rooms in the Centre, they will be accommodated in local hotels). Participants attending in person without accommodation are eligible for a €100 reduction on the standard in-person fee.
Lectures and tutorials will be in English, with the following schedule:
